FIRST AID
Powder Form - Action Steps
-
Skin contact : Negligible hazard. Wash with soap and water\
-
Eye contact : i) Flush eyes with large amounts of cold sterile water until irritation subsides.
-
ii) If irritation persists seek medical attention.
-
Inhalation : First aid not normally required
-
Ingestion : No hazard in normal industrial use. First Aid not normally required
Molten Form - Action Steps
Skin/Eye contact :
-
Immediately immerse or flush the affected area with large amounts of cold sterile water to dissipate heat and limit the injury
-
No attempt should be made to remove the thermoplastic or any clothing that may be fused to the damaged area.
-
Seek immediate medical attention and give this information sheet to medical staff.
Inhalation : In normal industrial use, First aid is not normally required for Inhalation of fumes.
Ingestion : Seek immediate medical attention
PRECAUTIONS IN HANDLNG AND USE
-
General : Hot applied thermoplastic road marking material should not be used in its molten form by anybody not formally trained in safe handling procedures.
-
Storage and Transportation : Thermoplastic materials should be stored safely and securely in areas not subject to excessive heat or contamination from fuels, oils or greases.
-
Personal Protective Equipment : Wear long sleeved flame retardant overalls, industrial, safety shoes/boots. Industrial heat resistant gloves with extended sleeves, gauntlet type. Full face shield for loading and running off preheaters. Use proper respiratory protection when working in areas of poor ventilation.
-
Heating : Ensure that all operatives are fully conversant with equipment manufacturer safety instructions for lighting, feeding and shutting down of preheaters. Maintain equipment in good working order, ensure temperature gauges are accurate and calibrated regularly. Do not overheat material. Do not maintain at working temperature for longer than is necessary (maximum 6 hours). To avoid danger of hot material splashing, great care should be taken when adding material to hot material already in the preheater. Use well charged preheaters but do not overfill, allow for expansion of the molten thermoplastic.
Application : The 'Maximum Application Temperature' and 'Maximum safe Heating Temperature' are marked on our packages in accordance with MOST 803 / BS 3262: Part I.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Fire : The prime consideration in the event of a fire must be the safety of the operatives and anyone in the immediate vicinity of the fire. The procedures listed below are recommended only when personal safely is not at risk. If the fire cannot be extinguished without endangering personal safely, call the Fire Brigade Immediately.
In the event of a fire in the Preheater : Fire will produce dense black smoke containing harmful products of combustion.
-
Turn off gas or heating source immediately.
-
Turn off agitator and extinguish flames using dry powder or CO2 fire extinguisher.
-
Do not use water at any time, either to extinguish the fire or to cool the preheater.
-
Leave preheater open.Introduce more cold material into the preheater if possible to assist in reducing overall product temperature.
-
Allow to cool, check temperature gauge. Do not drain off material until it has cooled below the maximum safe heating temperature.
Spillag / Escape
In the event of spillage or escape :
-
If safe to do so - shut off source.
-
Contain the spillage.
-
Allow to solidify before disposal.
ENVIRONMENTAL
Waste material should be disposed of in accordance with local disposal regulations for non hazardous substances.
