L&T Construction has won a Rs21.6bn ($403m) contract from India based GMR Infrastructure for construction of stretches of six-laning of Kishangarh Udaipur Ahmedabad highway in India. The engineering, procurement and construction contract is part of the Kishangarh Udaipur Ahmedabad project - included in Phase V of the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP) of the National Highways Authority of India.

The project is part of National Highways Authority of India's plan to upgrade the four-lane section of Golden Quadrilateral to six lanes and work will be carried out on National Highway-8 (NH-8) which connects India's capital, Delhi with business capital Mumbai.

A major portion of the road widening will be on the 1,428km-long NH-8, connecting Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Under the project, GMR will construct 3,336km of lanes and operate the highway for 26 years under the concession agreement. The firm will pay a premium of Rs6.3bn ($127m) for the first year, which will then increase by 5% annually during the concession period.

Earlier this year, L&T Oman, a subsidiary of L&T, won two contracts worth OMR68.4m ($177m) in Oman to build the Wadikabir-Darsait road as well as the one for Mahlah-Ghubbrat al Tam-Ismaiyah. The Wadikabir-Darsait project involves the design and construction of flyovers and underpasses along the road and is expected to be completed in 24 months. The Mahlah-Ghubbat al Tam-Ismaiyah project involves the construction of 45km of road as well as four bridges and cross-drainage work.

National Highways Authority of India is widening 49 highway projects under Phase V of the National Highways Development Programme.
